What causes damaged hair and what can I do about it?

What causes damaged hair and what can I do about it?

- Split ends. Damage at the very end of the hair shafts results in split ends. The only solution: Cut them off.

- Frizzies. Frizzies happen when the cuticle of the hair is disturbed by over processing (like using perms and tints at the same time) , by friction (teasing and brushing) , and by seeks which is the biggest culprit. Friction, by the way, can be something as gentle as towel -drying your hair or simply running your fingers through it. These are anti freeze products on the market to smooth distributed cuticles. But the best way to get rid of the freezes is to avoid them altogether. Be gentle with your hair; do not snap combs or brushes through it, don't attempt to comb or brush wet hair without a detangler.

- Environmental damage. Sunlight, pollution, swimming pool chlorine, and tap water can all dry hair. Protect your hair when you swim by rubbing in conditioner and leaving it in and by wearing a bathing cap. Rinse your hair thoroughly when you get out of the pool to get rid of the chlorine. If your tap water is hard, buying shampoos and conditioners specially formulated to compensate.

- Chemical processing. Permanent waves, straightening, and dyes can all dry the hair and disturb the cuticle. Avoid doing two or more at the same time.
